# Members

Members are the people in your team. You add a member with an invite by email. Each member has one [role](/account/teams-and-roles), which decides what the member can do. Owners and managers can invite members, change roles and remove members.

## Invite a member

1. In the dashboard, go to **Team**.
2. Select **Invite member**.
3. Type the person's **Email**.
4. Select a **Role**. The default is **Member**.
5. Select **Send invite**.

Spectate sends an email with the subject "You've been invited to join TEAM_NAME on Spectate". The invite shows under **Pending invites** until the person accepts it.

These rules apply to invites:

- An invite is valid for 7 days after Spectate sends it.
- You cannot invite someone who is already a member, or who has a pending invite.
- Spectate does not accept disposable email addresses.
- You cannot invite someone as owner. A team has one owner.
- Pending invites count towards the member limit of your plan. The Starter plan allows 3 members. The Team and Business plans have no member limit.

To send an expired invite again, invite the same address again. Spectate replaces the old invite.

To cancel an invite, select **Revoke** next to it under **Pending invites**.

## Accept an invite

1. Open the link in the invite email.
2. Sign in, or create an account, with the email address that received the invite.
3. Verify your email address, if you have not done that yet.
4. Select **Accept invite**.

You join the team with the role from the invite. The dashboard switches to the team.

An invite works only for the email address it was sent to. If the invite expired, ask the team to send a new one.

## Change a role

1. Go to **Team**.
2. In the list of members, select the new role next to the member.

The change applies at once. You cannot change the owner's role here. To make another member the owner, [transfer ownership](#transfer-ownership).

## Remove a member

1. Go to **Team**.
2. Select the remove button next to the member.
3. Select **Remove member** to confirm.

The person loses access to the team at once. Spectate also removes them from the team's on-call rotations. You cannot remove the owner. The dashboard does not let you remove yourself from a team.

## The owner

Every team has one owner. The owner is the only member who can delete the team or transfer ownership. The owner and billing members are the only roles that can manage billing. The person who creates a team is its owner.

You cannot change the owner's role or remove the owner. To give the team to another person, transfer ownership.

## Transfer ownership

Only the owner can transfer ownership. The new owner must already be a member of the team. If the person is not a member yet, [invite them](#invite-a-member) first.

1. Go to **Team → Settings**.
2. In the **Danger zone**, select **Transfer ownership**.
3. In **New owner**, select the member.
4. Type your password in **Your password**.
5. Select **Transfer ownership**.

The change applies at once:

- The member that you selected becomes the owner.
- You become a manager. You keep access to everything except billing and deleting the team.
- Spectate sends an email to you and to the new owner.

You cannot undo a transfer yourself. Only the new owner can transfer ownership back to you.

If the owner left your company and cannot sign in, send an email to [help@spectate.net](mailto:help@spectate.net). Spectate support can transfer ownership to another member of the team.

:::note
A transfer does not change the billing email at Vatly. Vatly sends invoices and receipts to the address it got at the team's first checkout. See [plans and billing](/account/plans-and-billing).

## Use the API

The [public API](/api-reference/members) can list members, change their roles and remove them. It can also list, send and revoke [invites](/api-reference/invites). This needs a [team API token](/developers/api-tokens) with `members:read` or `members:write`. If you try to change or remove the owner, the API returns `403` with the code `TEAM_OWNER_PROTECTED`. The API cannot transfer ownership, because a transfer needs the owner's password. Use the dashboard.
