Data and privacy
Spectate stores your data in Germany, on servers of Hetzner. It keeps measurements for a fixed time, with less detail as they get older. When you delete a monitor, a host, a domain or a whole team, Spectate permanently deletes its data after 7 days.
Where Spectate stores data
The API, the databases, the dashboard, the status pages, the file storage and the backups run in Germany.
The checkers that run your uptime monitors are in Amsterdam, New York, Singapore and Sydney. A checker outside the EU only gets the monitors for which you selected its region. It sends the results back to Germany and keeps no copy.
Data leaves the EU only when you choose that, for example with a checker region outside the EU, or a channel such as Slack. The subprocessors list names every company that processes customer data, what it gets and where.
How long Spectate keeps data
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Uptime checks, every single check | 90 days |
| Uptime checks, hourly totals | 400 days (about 13 months) |
| Uptime checks, daily totals | 3 years |
| Recorded outages, for the downtime report | 3 years |
| Host metric samples, every 15 seconds | 30 days |
| Host metrics, hourly minimum, maximum, average and last value | 400 days (about 13 months) |
| Failure snapshots: the response and screenshot of a failed check | 90 days |
| Charts in alert notifications | 30 days |
| Status page views, per minute | 400 days |
| Raw events from alert sources | 7 days |
Spectate keeps everything else until you delete it, or until the team is deleted. This includes settings, alerts, incidents, postmortems, status pages and members.
Deleted monitors, hosts and domains
When you delete a monitor, a host or a domain, it stops at once and no longer shows in the dashboard or the API. Spectate keeps its data for 7 more days. Then Spectate permanently deletes the resource with all its data:
- the check history, response times and outages of a monitor, and its failure snapshots (response bodies and screenshots)
- the metrics of a host
- the alerts of the resource, with their escalation history
Incidents stay, because they belong to the team. In the first 7 days, Spectate support can restore a deleted resource. Send an email to help@spectate.net. After 7 days, Spectate cannot restore it.
Delete a team
Only the owner can delete a team.
- In the dashboard, go to Team → Settings.
- Under Danger zone, select Delete team.
- Type the team name to confirm.
- Select Delete team.
What happens next:
- Monitoring stops at once. Spectate revokes the pending invites.
- The subscription does not renew. It ends with the current paid period.
- For 7 days, the team stays visible to its members. The owner can select Restore team under Team → Settings to keep everything and resume monitoring.
- After 7 days, Spectate permanently deletes all data of the team. This includes the history, status pages and their uploaded files. If the team installed the Slack app, Spectate also removes it from the Slack workspace.
After the grace period, Spectate cannot restore a deleted team.
A team without a paid plan for 90 days is also scheduled for deletion, with 14 days' notice. See plans and billing.
